I have always wanted to make a Pinata Cake, and my husbands birthday gave me the perfect reason! I scoured the internet reading tons of tutorials - and everyone thinks their method is the best. Well - I don't know if mine is the best ever, but after analyzing about 30 different options, I made up my own and it worked perfectly. I wanted to share it with you, because now you can just do this, and not waste 3 days of your life like I did watching 40 different YouTube videos trying to figure out the best method - I did that for you! Follow my steps below to success!
In order for this to work, your cake has to be at least 4 layers. It can be taller. It can also be any width (here pictured I used 9" round cake pans) but this can work with anything small to large. It's not about the size of the cake, it's about the height!
Bake all of your layers and let them cool completely. They cannot be warm at all.
If you are making a four layer like I did, set two aside, and flip two together, one on top of the other. By doing this when you cut your hole, you will make sure it lines up perfectly.
Using a deep cookie cutter or a glass (I used a regular drinking glass) press down and cut through both layers of cake at the same time. Remove SLOWLY and set aside small cuts of cake.
Put your bottom later on your cake board/plate, and apply a later of frosting. Then put the first later of cake with the hole. Apply frosting to the top but NOT the inside. Reason is, if the inside is frosted, when you place your fillings they will stick instead of pouring out. Repeat with the next later of your cake with the hole. Frost again. Fill your cake with your desired candy/sprinkles/etc. It should look a little bit like this.
Add top later to "seal" the cake, and frost as you would any other cake. Be very gentle when moving - I frosted mine on my actual cake stand so I wouldn't have to move it. It has a higher potential to break/crack vs a normal cake, so the less you move it the better you.
After it's frosted it's ready to go! When you take that first slice out, the filling pours out! It was fantastic to watch. It's easy to do, but looks fancy, which is my most favorite!
